How this works
Methodology reviewed July 2026Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) expresses how much lean mass you carry for your height — a muscularity number that, unlike raw weight, tells you whether you're building or preserving muscle. From weight, height, and body-fat %, the tool derives lean mass, then FFMI and a height-normalized FFMI so people of different heights can be compared on one scale.
lean body mass (kg) = weight × (1 − body-fat% / 100)
FFMI = lean body mass (kg) / height (m)²
normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in m)

- Body-fat % is reasonably accurate — the FFMI inherits any error in it.
- Interpretation bands come from studies of natural (drug-free) lifters; female norms run ~3 points lower.
