Body-Fat %
Calculator
A tape measure and three numbers get you a solid body-fat estimate. This uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, then breaks your weight into fat mass and lean mass.

How this works
Methodology reviewed July 2026This tool estimates body-fat percentage with the U.S. Navy circumference method — a tape-measure formula that uses the log of your waist, neck (and hip, for women) against height. It's not as precise as a DEXA scan, but it's free, repeatable, and good at tracking change over time.
Men: %BF = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077·log10(waist − neck) + 0.15456·log10(height)) − 450
Women: %BF = 495 / (1.29579 − 0.35004·log10(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100·log10(height)) − 450

- Measurements are taken snugly with a flexible tape at the standard landmarks.
- The Navy equations were derived on general adult populations and assume typical fat distribution.
- Circumference methods can be off by several points versus DEXA, especially at the extremes.
- Consistency matters more than absolute accuracy — measure the same way each time to track change.
- Body-fat percentage is one signal among many and says nothing on its own about health.
